Vredefort Dome Conservancy
Welcome
Welcome to the Vredefort Dome Conservancy – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest and oldest known meteorite impact structure. Formed over 2 billion years ago, our site offers a unique glimpse into Earth’s geological history and a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Nestled just 120 km southwest of Johannesburg, this serene landscape invites you to explore ancient crater rims, vibrant ecosystems, and a rich cultural heritage that spans millennia.

In June 2005 UNESCO declared the area as a WHS of “Outstanding Universal Value” meaning cultural and/or natural significance which is so exceptional as to transcend national boundaries and to be of common importance for present and future generations of all humanity. As such, permanent protection of this heritage is of the highest importance to the international community as a whole.
The national World Heritage Convention Act of 1999 is to be applied to the World Heritage property including various South African legal instruments.
In terms of these laws, all development within or outside the property is subjected to an environmental impact assessment. Protection in terms of the latter legislation also implies that mining or prospecting will be completely prohibited within the property or its buffer zone. An integrated management plan is required to address the critical issues of the enforcement of the special land use planning requirements for the private property farmlands within the property, the preservation of the aesthetic rural/natural landscape and the protection, presentation of and public access to the clearly defined key satellite components. These conditions are essential to ensure that active conservation management is possible.
The Dome Conservancy was established in 2004 with the vision to ensure a sustainable healthy environment within the Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site where residents and visitors alike can feel at peace knowing that the biodiversity of flora & fauna (biota), geology and hydrology is well managed.
